Catalonia and the pursuit of independence: factors affecting separatism of the Catalans

Abstrakt

This paper reveals, characterises, and evaluates the factors which influence Catalan society and the creation of nationalist aspirations and separatist tendencies in the Spanish autonomous community of Catalonia. Based on the respondents’ answers, as well as numerous secondary literature sources, a comparative analysis was developed. This aimed to understand why Catalans would argue in favour of independence, the roots of these claims, and the different influences that can affect the mind-set of individuals and society. The respondents were interviewed about the following areas: characteristic symbols of Catalonia and the Catalan people, reasons for separatism, initial awareness, influence of the environment, personal expression and attitude, and future expectations.
